Division One
Set Piece Title:
"My Delight"
by JAMES MORRISON

This year’s Div 1 test piece is a brisk waltz that features each section of the band in a different setting.
The Bones play a chorale that gives them a chance to show their ability to blend and make a warm sound. This is rubato, so playing together will require good communication.
The Saxes play a soli that begins unaccompanied and builds into a voiced up-tempo rave with rhythm section. A fat baritone sound will help with this one, as will a bright, clear lead alto.
Trumpets have a soli that is almost a be-bop solo. The trick here is that you rarely play together – the line is often split one after another. This will let everyone hear that the whole section can really play and there are no ‘passengers’ being carried by the top players.
Rhythm section will have challenges all through the piece as the time signature changes frequently and different ‘feels’ are called for. All will need to have their ‘reading’ chops up to scratch as there are quite a few lines to read, rather than just chord charts.
Soloist passages are available for flugel horn, tenor sax (or soprano) and piano.
Having said all of that, it’s a happy sounding piece that should be lots of fun to play.

Can’t wait to hear it!
Keep Swinging,
James

This is a two sided chart (two versions of "No Need To Shout ”)
Easy Big Band plus Flexible Small Group

NO NEED TO SHOUT is a “Bb” blues written in a Count Basie groove setting.
A simple riff  builds throughout the chart climaxing with a key change to “C”
then to “Eb” which really drives home.
There are two optional written solos.
This solo space is open to any instrument.  In fact I encourage many soloists to attempt a solo using the “Bb” blues scale supplied on all parts.

Side one  “No Need To Shout” is for the larger ensemble:
5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums
(optional conga, vibes, FHorn, flute, clarinet, scat vocal)

Side two  “No Need To Shout ” is for the small group which must have a rhythm section and is written so as any four or more instruments can be added.
Ideal instrumentation for the small group version would be: Rhythm section with a trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, trombone, bari sax.  Or any similar combo’.
It can be played with any of the added, extra, optional written solo lead sheets for Bb, Eb, Ctc, Cbc instruments, or scat vocal.
If you are unsure about instrumentation, please call and discuss with Ed Wilson on FreeCall 1800 688 190
