GARN Original composition Level 5 |
This chart is a swinger with a difference; the horn section get a work out on their own and the drums should have fun with the coda! Solos can be as you see fit - only use the background figures for the last solo as they build into the shout chorus. Keeping good time will be really important in the unaccompanied section for the horns and watch the dynamics - be as soft and loud as you can. At the end of the day this is just a 12 bar blues but it should provide a challenge to play it tight and with a solid groove. By the way, the title is of course Aussie slang for "keep going". | WPM 6013 |

UP LATE Original composition Level 5 |
Written by James Morrison for the Generations in Jazz competition 2007. This has a funky “hip hop” feel that really relies on the rhythm section to have a great (phat) groove. Right from the first note it should be “pumping” and the drum fills in the intro can be as adventurous as you like – just be sure the band knows where the time is! |

ZOG'S JOG Level 5+ NEW to PDF $30 Or $60 hard copy |
Written by James Morrison for the Generations in Jazz competition 2008.
There is a great tradition in Be-Bop of taking the chords to well-known tunes and writing a new melody over them. Such classics as Anthropology, Ornithology, Confirmation and many others, all used the chord progressions of standards like ‘I’ve Got Rhythm’. Following in that tradition I have loosely based ‘Zog’s Jog’ on the chords to Ray Noble’s ‘Cherokee’. It’s a great set of chords to improvise on and allows the soloist to really go some places. In true Be-Bop style the melody is complex, fast and a real ‘chop-buster’, every section of the band will get a work out and there’s room for some solo histrionics. The important thing with this chart is to not only make it through all the fast lines – but more importantly, to swing whilst playing so fast. Of course the quaver lines will be played straight at this tempo but the rhythm section must still have a great groove. There’s not too much subtlety here – Be-Bop big band is the ‘heavy-metal’ of jazz, so don’t treat this too gently – just keep it tight and swing like crazy! |
